The federal workforce fell to 2.674 million employees in August. That's the lowest level since May 1966, per new Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
Federal employment declined by another 5,000 jobs that month alone. The total is now 11.2% below the 3.01 million workers recorded in January 2025. That's a reduction of roughly 336,000 positions since Trump took office.
Most of the cuts came in his first year, through firings, resignations, and retirements. The pace has since slowed considerably. Federal employment is down just 11,000 positions since January of this year.
Defense and Veterans Affairs both saw tens of thousands of departures. HHS plans to shrink from 82,000 full-time employees to 62,000. USAID saw the steepest percentage cut of any agency.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called the broader shift a "reprivatization" of the economy. Meanwhile, private-sector hiring has strengthened, with wages rising faster than the government payroll shrinks.
Some economists caution that raw headcount numbers miss context. The U.S. population has grown by more than 70% since 1966. As a share of the total workforce, federal employment has fallen from a 1944 peak of 7.5% to under 1.8% today.
Does a smaller federal government, paired with stronger private-sector hiring, represent the kind of structural rebalancing the country actually needs?
